For my mother, it is the most important herb in the kitchen—and not only because it is the only one she can grow.

BasiL – Memory by Antonella Sgobbo

An artistic heritage project documenting the relationship between culture and the natural world, Stejjer Imfewħa collects the stories of migrants and natives living on the island of Malta. Part found memoir, part herbal, the memories and knowledge shared in the book were collected from four interactive workshops over the course of nine months in 2015.

The project was commissioned by the Integra Foundation in conjunction with Friends of the Earth Malta, and audio versions of the stories were shared through an exhibition (“Herbarium“) at the Inquisitor’s palace in May of 2016.

The artworks invite the visitors to lean in and listen closely, smell the flowers and herbs, and to look closely at the texts presented on the installation.
